Tip of the round: press N to switch between first and third person.

SS12

SS13 in 3D, using SS14.
Walk the station. Look around. Get lost in maintenance, in three dimensions.

Station Announcement:

Welcome aboard SS12. A shuttle transferring you to your station will arrive shortly.

Same jobs. Same rules. Same people. Same chaos.

SS12 — Space Station 14
First-person view down a station corridor in 3D, with a coffee machine and reinforced walls.
Third person, over the shoulder. Or first person. Your call, Passenger.

What is this

SS12 is a 3D view for Space Station 14. You walk around the station, look around with the mouse, and everything else works the way you already know. It is the SS14 game underneath, so nothing about the rules, jobs or balance changes.

Left: the usual top-down view. Right: SS12, same moment, same corridor.

Third person and first person

Over-the-shoulder by default. Press N any time to go first person.

Mouse look

WASD walks where you are looking. The crosshair turns green when you can reach what you are pointing at.

Everything still works

Pick up, throw, shoot, open doors and lockers, drag things around, cuff people, talk. Aim with the cross in the middle.

Looks like a station

Soft lighting, glowing lamps, shadows under people and things, stars outside the windows.

Things have a body

Items on the floor are lifted and drawn with thickness, so a crowbar looks like a crowbar and not like a stain.

Kind to slow computers

Every extra has its own switch (F11), and the game turns the fancy parts down by itself if it starts to chug.

Join the test server

Nothing to install. You need the normal Space Station 14 launcher; the 3D version downloads by itself when you connect.

  1. Get the launcher

Download it from spacestation14.com and sign in or play as a guest.

  2. Direct connect

In the launcher open the server list and use Direct Connect. Type lol.ss12.org and press Connect. Or try this link if the launcher is already installed.

  3. Pick a job. Passenger is fine.

Wait for the round, spawn in, then use the mouse. Press F11 the first time to check your graphics settings.

FAQ

Questions we have been asked, or expect to be.

What does "SS12" mean?

SS13 in 3D, using SS14. The Space Station feel, walked through in 3D, running on the Space Station 14 game and engine. Nothing to do with the old BYOND code. The number is a joke that got out of hand.

Does it change how the game plays?

No. Same jobs, rules, items and balance as the server you are on. What changes is how you see the station, and that W walks towards where you look.

Do I need to install a mod?

No. Join with the normal launcher and the 3D version downloads with the server's other files.

Will it run on my computer?

Almost certainly. It needs a graphics card with OpenGL 3.3, which is nearly everything since about 2012. If it runs slowly, press F11 and set Quality to Low. The game also lowers the quality itself if it notices it is struggling.

Can I still play the old top-down way?

On servers that allow it, press F12. Servers can make 3D mandatory for living players. Ghosts and admins can always switch.

Is it official?

No. SS12 is a fan project and has nothing to do with the Space Station 14 team. It is free and open source (MIT licence).

Can I add it to my own server?

Yes, if your server runs engine version 286 or newer. There is an installer that tells you what it will change and can remove it again. Start at the GitHub page.

Is the singularity loose?

Probably. Nobody set up the engine. Nobody ever sets up the engine.

Are there server rules?

Yes. Be decent, don't grief for no reason, and listen to the admins. Rule 0 applies.

Does the Clown honk in 3D?

Yes. It's louder, and it comes from behind you.
